Supporting Children with Anxiety-Related Challenging Behaviors
Training Description
A significant percentage of children with autism experience anxiety, which can lead to challenging behaviors like work refusal, verbal outbursts, tantrums, and aggression. This presentation will help educators identify signs of anxiety and provide strategies for creating a supportive learning environment. Attendees will learn tools to address anxiety-driven behaviors, foster emotional regulation, and promote positive engagement. Specific interventions will be shared, which can be integrated into individualized educational plans and classroom routines to support children's growth.
Training Objectives
Participants will be able to:- Recognize signs of anxiety-driven behaviors in children with autism.
- Understand anxiety's impact on behavior and learning.
- Apply strategies to create a supportive classroom environment.
- Implement individualized, evidence-based interventions for positive behavioral outcomes.

About the Presenter
Melissa K. Burkhardt, M.S. Ed., BCBA, is the founder of Early Start Autism, specializing in early intervention for young children with autism. A BCBA and ESDM therapist, she taught ESE Pre-K for 20 years. She coaches teachers, presents nationally, and won the 2019 Service Provider of the Year award. She is also the award-winning author of Exceptionally Good Friends.
