Karen Berkman

Speaker Bio:

Dr. Karen A. Berkman is on faculty in the Department of Child and Family Studies and the Executive Director of CARD-USF (Center for Autism and Related Disabilities) and the Director of the Learning Academy at the University of South Florida (USF). She holds Masters degrees in psychology and social work as well as a PhD in Special Education.  Dr. Berkman currently coordinates all project activities and administrative responsibilities at the USF and FGCU CARD sites. Dr. Berkman has spent her career working in the field of disabilities as a clinician and program administrator.  She is recognized for her seminal work on challenging behavior and lifestyle planning as well as program development for individuals with developmental disabilities.

The presenter will provide the audience with overview level information on mental health issues that may be seen within the autism population, symptom presentation and treatment options

Objectives:

1) To present an overview of common psychiatric conditions that occur in persons with autism spectrum disorders

2) To provide information on how these conditions present in the ASD population
